When I try to install or run the SM-Reports Work File program on my computer, I get this message (or similar) "16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program that you are trying to start or install C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS DOS and Microsoft Windows applications." How can I fix this?

This error message may be caused by a virus that has damaged one ormore important files used by Windows. For some users it has also appeared after the installation of a Windows Service pack - although this may just be a coincidence. The problem may appear to be limited to only SM-Marks as other software continues to work normally, but this is because SM-Marks uses the 16 bit subsystem of Windows which is a bit unusual now. A search of the Internet will reveal that the error message does affect other software.

There is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article about it. You can find it at:

As Microsoft may move it's support pages you can also find the same article by visiting:

http://support.microsoft.com/

and doing a search for 324767. This article is for Windows XP, but you can also find a similar article for Windows 2000 by searching for 305521.
