Is
SM-Reports is able to calculate an Overall Achievement letter for the
new reports. If it can, how can I do this?
The grade for the overall achievement can be calculated by averaging
the levels of achievement for each outcome using the Tools|Calculate
grades
command of the Work File program. If this command is not in your copy
of SM-Reports you can download the latest version of the Work File
program from here.
-
If you require a different method to calculate the Overall Achievement,
such as based on a mark then SM-Marks 2 or another markbook program can
be used, and the grades pasted into the work file.
Here is an example showing the way the SM-Reports Work File program can
now calculate an overall grade for you.
Step 1

The levels of achievement for the outcomes are entered as shown here
with the grades A to E, but you could also use numeric codes of 1 to 5 if you prefer.
Step 2

Then move to any cell in the column where you want to store the overall
grade. This is just another column that is set in the Report|Definition command. Then choose the
Tools|Calculate grades command.
The column can have any name you want, if does not need to be named
Overall Grade, in the Report|Definition command. Provided the correct strand is used as
detailed in the Help|School Information for the template being used, the name does not affect the calculation
of the level.
Step 3

Click to select which columns are to be averaged to work out the grade.
In this example work file there are no other columns, but this command lists all column in the work file
and the teacher can choose only the ones needed for the overall grade.
Step 4

Choose OK and the grades averaged and the single grade put in the
column first selected in step 2.
-
This column for the overall grade is an ordinary column and the teacher
can type over any grade, if necessary to make adjustments.
Using numeric levels of achievement
The Tools|Calculate grades command averages the letters from A
to E in the columns you select to work out the overall achievement. If
you are using numerals from 1 to 5 to represent the levels of
achievement, the Tools|Calculate grades
command interprets a 1 as the highest level of achievement and 5 as the
lowest. When putting the grade in the column the average is
converted to a letter where 1 is an A, 2 is a B and so on.
- If your reports use a
convention where 5 is the highest level of achievement and 1 is the
lowest then you must turn on the option shown below before choosing OK,
as shown below.
